Biography

Aman Grewal has been nursing for over 35 years. She began working at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) where she found her passion in pediatrics and later in pediatric emergency, before settling into leadership.

Her involvement with BCNU came early in her career during the strike of 1989 when she took on the challenge of serving as her region's job action coordinator for SMH while the chief steward was away on leave. She stepped up to take on hospital management, coordinate picket lines, and liaise with other unions to help maintain the job action at the large campus.

Aman also served on the Worksite Job Action Committee during the subsequent strikes in 1993 and 2001 and served as a ward rep for over 15 years. She has held a variety of positions at SMH during the past 33 years. These include clinical care coordinator, patient care coordinator (pediatrics) and diabetes nurse educator (working with adults, children and gestational diabetics), shift coordinator and site leader.

Aman comes from a union family. Her father was very active in International Woodworkers of America (IWA) and she saw first hand how members' advocacy and camaraderie extended to their families.

Aman was elected vice president in a 2019 by-election and re-elected in 2020.  As Vice President she was the union's provincial lobby coordinator and served as chair of BCNU's Human Rights and Equity Committee, and Truth and Reconciliation Working Group. She also served on BCNU's Policy Review Committee, and several working groups, including the Regional Bylaw and Policy Review, Seniors Strategy, Internationally Educated Nurses, Governance, Structural, and Council Norms working groups.

In  September 2021, Aman assumed the role of BCNU President. Aman believes in advocating for social justice and raising equity issues for clients, patients, communities, and members. That includes fighting to ensure fellow nurses' rights are protected and that they do not lose any more of what they fought so hard to gain on the picket line.
