Day of Mourning April 28

April 18, 2016
The Cost of Unsafe Work Conditions

April 28 is the National Day of Mourning in Canada. This day honours the memory of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered an illness as a result of a work-related incident. To commemorate the Day of Mourning, events will be held across BC on April 28; fallen workers will be remembered and honoured.

In BC there were 122 fatalities in 2015. That is about two people every week in our province who have lost their lives while doing their job.

Health Care is not an Exception

  • Across Canada the health care and social services industry has the highest number of injuries.
  • In health care, WorkSafeBC accepted 8,677 claims in 2015.
  • In 2015, WorkSafeBC accepted 518 health care workers permanent disability claims due to injury or occupational disease.
  • From 2005 - 2015, WorkSafeBC has reported 29 deaths among health care professionals.
  • In 2015, there were two deaths of workers in the health care sector.

Safety is our Top Priority

We can all commit to building a culture where health and safety is the priority. Let's honour the memory of fallen workers by committing to work together to prevent injuries, illnesses, violence, and fatalities in the workplace.

Safe and healthy health care workplaces are foundational to a system of safe, sustainable, high quality patient care.
