BCNU opposes employer request to change N95 respirator fit testing requirements

The BC Nurses' Union is opposed to BC Health Authorities' request to WorkSafeBC for permission to reduce N95 respirator fit testing to once every two years.

The BC Nurses' Union is opposed to BC Health Authorities' request to WorkSafeBC for permission to reduce N95 respirator fit testing to once every two years.

BCNU submitted a written response to WorkSafeBC on November 29, 2013 describing why the current requirement for annual fit testing must continue.

The union is concerned that extending the time between fit testing will reduce the effectiveness of this critical protective device and place its members at greater risk of exposure to respiratory illnesses.

N95 respirators are the "last line of defence" in protecting healthcare workers from exposure to biological agents. They work by fitting tightly to the face, so that the air workers breathe is filtered first. Fit testing, combined with education and training, is required to ensure that respirators continue to fit well enough to do their job and protect wearers from respiratory illnesses like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), tuberculosis (TB) and novel influenza virus.

Actions you can take:

  • Raise concerns about exposure to biological agents and protective equipment with your manager or supervisor
  • Know where and when you can be fit tested at your worksite
  • Keep your fit test current. Ensure that you are fit tested annually or more often if required
  • Familiarize yourself with how to conduct a point-of-care risk assessment and know when a respirator is required
  • If you need assistance, contact your steward or BCNU Joint Occupational Health and Safety committee member.

Quality patient care is always BCNU's first priority, but it cannot be provided at the expense of nurses' safety.
