Day of Mourning April 28

April 22, 2013
The Cost of Unsafe Work Conditions

To commemorate the Day of Mourning, remembrance events will be held across BC on April 28th. Workers in Canada and around the world who have been tragically injured or lost their lives while working are remembered and honoured. In BC so far this year, there have been 149 fatalities. That's three people each week that lost their lives while doing their job.

Healthcare is not Immune

  • WorkSafeBC accepted 13,325 claims in 2011.
  • In 2011, 325 healthcare workers in B.C. were permanently disabled due to injury or occupational disease.
  • Since 2000, WorkSafeBC has reported over 20 deaths among healthcare professionals.

Communities Come Together

April 28th falls on a Sunday this year. Some communities' public ceremonies will be held on Friday, April 26th. Visit the WorkSafeBC website for information on activities in your community at www.worksafebc.com.

WorkSafeBC will also be webcasting the Day of Mourning proceedings live on WorkSafeBC.com for workers who cannot attend their local ceremonies but still want to view the events.

Visit the online memorial for killed and injured workers at www.dayofmourning.bc.ca.

Safety is a Top Priority
