BCNU Launches Member-Focused Gender Diversity Survey

January 25, 2022
Findings to help inform upcoming advocacy, education, and collective bargaining strategies

BCNU is looking forward to collecting member feedback that brings to light the experiences, concerns, and needs of all members on the topic of gender diversity, with a particular focus on those who identify as Two-Spirit, trans, and/or gender diverse.

The recommendation for a survey of the membership was brought to council last summer by BCNU's LGBTQ caucus in light of increasing reports of workplace discrimination, bullying and harassment experienced by Two-Spirit, trans, and/or gender diverse members. While we strive to make our union and workplaces a safe and welcoming environment for all, we recognize that not all members may feel safe and welcome. Hearing directly from you will enable all of us to equitably address the concerns of an increasingly diverse membership.

To ensure best practice, BCNU has commissioned TransFocus to conduct the survey. TransFocus is a third-party service provider that takes a holistic approach to analysis including lived experience to gender inclusion.

With support from BCNU's LGBTQ caucus and BCNU's Professional Practice and Advocacy department, the goal is to deliver a comprehensive report on gender diversity for BCNU to use in its advocacy, education, and collective bargaining strategies.

The survey will not collect any identifying information about members and is completely anonymous. Any answers to open-ended questions that are quoted in the report will have all identifying information removed (e.g., names, locations, and descriptions).

Members who participate in the survey will be eligible to enter a draw to win one of three $50 gift cards.

BCNU encourages every member to participate in this survey.

The survey closes on Monday Feb. 28, 2022.
