Union of Psychiatric Nurses (UPN) formally merges with BCNU

January 12, 2015
The BC Labour Relations Board has now declared the BC Nurses' Union to be the "successor trade union" to the Union of Psychiatric Nurses, following an application under Section 37 of the provincial labour code.

The decision to approve BCNU as the bargaining agent for former UPN members was sent to all affected parties including the Health Employers' Association of BC (HEABC) in late December.

The application to the LRB is a technical requirement in order to finalize the merger voted for by a strong majority of UPN members in October 2014. This decision clears the way for former UPN members to become fully entitled members of the BC Nurses' Union, after meeting the administrative requirement of filing a membership application form.

All former UPN members now merged with BCNU must complete a Membership Application Form in order to receive the benefits of BCNU membership and to meet the administrative requirements of the various employers. This requirement applies to all former UPN members, whether they voted in favour or against the merger or chose not to participate in the vote. Failure to complete an application would not only affect a Registered Psychiatric Nurse's rights to services and representation by BCNU, but could compromise their ability to hold their existing position, accrue seniority and receive pay from the employer.

Every RPN in the UPN database will soon be receiving an application form by mail along with a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope. This form requires disclosure of personal and employment information and the signing of a declaration and pledge to abide by BCNU's constitution and bylaws. It should be completed and signed as soon as possible after receipt.

BCNU membership cards and information about the union's structure and services will be sent to you shortly after the membership application forms are received. If you do not receive an application form by mail by February 2nd, please contact Laura Fowler at 604-433-2268, extension 2197, or lfowler@bcnu.org.

If you are NOT receiving updates, news, and events emailed to you, log in to the BCNU Member Portal and update your information.
